Summer Session Information

Saint Athanasius and Saint Cyril Theological School announces its Summer Session, in six weeks of intensive courses from June 14-July 24, 2015

1.  Orthodox Approach to Drug Addiction with Dr. Michael Hanna on MONDAYS, 6:00-9:00pm (live instruction only at St Maurice Church).  Provides a biblical, psychological, sociological, and patristic approach to counseling those afflicted with various addictions.

2. Coptic Language I with Mr. Hany Takla on TUESDAYS, 6:00-9:00pm (online and live instruction at St. Shenouda Archimandrite society in Los Angeles). This course will introduce students to the basics of reading Coptic (Bohairic dialect). No prior knowledge of the ancient Egyptian language or Greek is required. The course will include grammar, morphology, syntax, and hundreds of vocabulary words. Following this course, students should be able to read passages in the New Testament.

3. Introduction to Theological Research and Writing with Deacon Severus Mikhail, WEDNESDAYS, 6:00-9:00pm (live instruction at St. Maurice Church). This seminar introduces seminary students to graduate-level research and writing skills with specific attention to academic writing, theological research, citations, and elements of writing style. The seminar introduces the nature of theological reflection and “thinking theologically” concerning various topics and issues they encounter in academic study and ministry. This is a required course for ACTS students.

4. Introduction to Orthodox Christianity with Fr. Daniel Habib on THURSDAYS, 6:00-9:00pm (online and live instruction at St Maurice Church). This course is meant to understand a few methods of teaching a Coptic Orthodox Catechism to individuals inquiring about the Coptic Orthodox Church. It begins with an understand of Truth, the source of our teachings, the practice of our teachings in worship and how we read Holy Scripture, and the effects of our teaching in our lives. We will speak about the relevant history of the Coptic Orthodox Church as it relates to these subjects. In addition, we will speak about the particularly sensitive topics that trouble Christians from other denominations who are inquiring about the Orthodox Faith. Neither this course nor the material in this course, are meant to be used to proselytize, but only meant to offer a systematic method of educating people interested in the Coptic Orthodox Church.

5. Canon Law with Fr. Moses Samaan (online instruction only). In this course, we will provide an overview of Canon Law in the Orthodox Church, beginning with the theory of canon law and progressing into the accepted sources of Canon Law in the Coptic Orthodox Church as well as practical application of a cross-section of canons relating to the Divine Liturgy, clergy and laity, and social issues.
